Cal-Fire is warning people not to let the late rains make them complacent about the threat of wildfires. Although there’s been above average rainfall, and the California drought has been broken, all the rain also means more fuel for wildfires once the grasses and brush finish drying out. In fact, the several small fires on the central coast this week mean that although there was only a 10-percent chance of ignition, sunlight on the drier areas, coupled with wind, can be a very dangerous combination.
All area residents are encouraged to create “defensible space” around their homes, especially if they are in a High Fire Severity Zone….such as north Monterey county, the outskirts of the city of Monterey, and the Big Sur Area.
