Construction could begin as soon as this fall on campsites at Fort Ord Dunes State Park in Marina.
The $25 million dollar project includes nearly 100 campsites for a mix of R-V camping, tent camping, and hike and bike-in camping. The campsites will be between the dunes and out of view of Highway 1.
State Parks officials say campers will have use of four miles of shoreline and some of California’s best-preserved dune habitat.
Monterey County’s other oceanfront camping is at Big Sur and usually in high demand. Nightly rates have not been set for the new campground, but Parks officials say nearby facilities charge as little as $35-a-nght.
