(19:00) SALINAS – After clearing out a homeless encampment in Salinas’ chinatown, city and P. G. & E. employees are working to eliminate potential toxins where an old gas plant once stood. The factory opened in the 1800s and was closed and dismantled in the 1930s. In the 1960s Unocal bought the site to store gasoline there, but a hole developed in one of the underground tanks….spilling gas into the soil. Now that the homeless encampment is gone, P. G. & E. wants to finish the clean-up job that was started back then.
