(19:53) LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY – A former marine, who’s left leg was amputated when he stepped on an I-E-D in Afghanistan 5 years ago, will be driving in this weekend’s Continental Monterey Grand Prix….and it’s not his first race in the last couple years either J After losing his left leg, and undergoing about 50 surgeries to repair other I-E-D related damage (to his other leg, both arms, and his torso) U.S. Marine Staff-Sergeant Liam Dwyer was told he’d never walk again, much less drive a stick-shift car. Before being deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, Dwyer drove in rally races and autocross events, and he told his doctor he was going to race again….and he has been. This time, though, the doctor who taught Dwyer to walk again will be out at the race course to see Dwyer compete. The Grand Prix is scheduled to be held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday….and Dwyer is scheduled to be co-driving the number 27 Freedom Autosport Mazda Mx-5 with Tom Long. Army veteran Mark Pombo is also on the Freedom Autosport Team…and they have both said that they hope to inspire other veterans (and active duty people) to get involved with racing (because race teams are a natural fit for them).
