Andy Mills Interview 06.01.2020 1130 JAS

Over the weekend, protests over the death of George Floyd took place in downtown Santa Cruz.

During the peaceful demonstrations, an historic moment took place when the Chief of Police joined them in the act of taking a knee on Saturday. Santa Cruz Police Chief Andy Mills shares the full story in an interview with KSCO.

“Typical Santa Cruz. [The Protests were] peaceful, it was respectful, and it was in the best traditions of what we consider this wonderful community.”

In addition to standing with protesters, Mills mentions the following training takes place with the officers of his department:

  • Implicit Bias Training
  • Tactical De-escalation (non lethal use of force)
  • Teaching Intervention of Police accountability of their fellow colleagues

When Chief Mills mentions the intervention of police holding each other accountable, he sent an email to the whole department with a Todd Jarvis quote: “If You see it, you own it”. This was in response to the officers who stood by the scene of where Floyd was murdered.
