There is now a re-opening plan in place for the Last Chance Mercantile, although an agency to run it still needs to be found. The Board of Directors for the Monterey Regional Waste Management District, where the store is located, is expected to review submitted applications at their January meeting. The Kast Chance Mercantile, where re-useable construction and landscape material, as well as other items are sold, was created back in 1991 as a monthly flea market, and by 1996 was operating 5 days a week, with a staff of 15….in an 8,000 squarefoot building with a 2-acre paved yard. The only part of the operation not expected to re-open is the California Refund Value Buy-Back program. Groups and agencies interested in running the Mercantile need to submit their proposals and qualifications prior to 1 p.m. November 30th.
