Newsom: Renters Protected Thru Jan 31 09-02-2017:40 DC

Gov. Gavin Newsom held a news conference Wednesday where he talked about renter protections in California. Californians who haven’t paid their rent since March 1 because of COVID-19 can stay in their homes through at least Jan. 31 under a new state law signed by the governor earlier this week.

Newsom also talked about the state’s efforts to protect the homeless amid the pandemic. He said the state has provided 16,400 rooms and served 22,200 homeless Californians since the start of the outbreak.

Here’s some of the latest COVID-19 data:

  • 4.4% positivity rate over the last seven days; 5.1% over the last 14 days
  • 23% decrease in COVID-19 hospitalizations in the last 14 days
  • 23% decrease in ICU admissions in the last 14 days
  • 4,255 new cases Sept. 1
  • Seven-day average of 4,708 new cases
