The state of California pays about 100 dollars per test for Covid-19, and so, in an effort to bring that cost down, Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a contract with PerkinElmer to build a new laboratory in California….and create a full supply chain for Covid-19 testing. It is hoped that the new partnership will lead to less expensive tests, and a faster turnaround time for getting test results. PerkinElmer is expected to start processing tens of thousands of new tests by November….and reach their full capacity by March of next year.
Although PerkinElmer will initially use polymerase chain reaction diagnostic testing, which is considered the current gold standard of testing, the company is allowed to pivot to new testing technology once it becomes available.
