Mayor Justin Cummings has proclaimed July as Black Lives Matter month in Santa Cruz.
The city council also voted to display the Afro-American and Black Lives Metter flags outside city hall every July. The council also voted to approve a Black Lives Matter street mural.
In a Facebook post, Mayor Cummings said the council also banned the use of predictive policing and facial recognition, because of their propensity for bias against people of color. The mayor will also create a working group to advise the police department on racial issues. Cummings said he was pleased to have Police Chief Andy Mills supporting police reform measures in Santa Cruz.
