The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office says it will waive the death penalty for the man accused of kidnapping and killing 13-year-old Christina Williams in 1998.
The decision is in exchange for his agreement to waive his right to a jury trial and his rights to state and federal writs and appeals.
58-year-old Charles Holifield is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole when he goes to trial next March. In exchange for dropping the death penalty. Holifield has waived his right to a jury trial and various appeals.
Holifield was changed in April 2017. He is accused of kidnapping and killing the Seaside girl on June 12, 1998. Her body was discovered on Jan. 12, 1999 in Marina.
The DA’s office told KION Television it came to the no-death-penalty decision after talking to the Williams family, who told prosecutors they wanted closure for their daughter’s case.
