The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s office warns that its deputies will never call you on the telephone and offer to make outstanding warrants “go away” in exchange for information or money.
The warning was issued this week after a county resident received a telephone call claiming to be someone from the Sheriff’s office saying the victim had several warrants and faced a $2,000 fine.
Figuring out that the call was a scam, the intended victim provided no information to the caller. Calling the number back later, real deputies received a voicemail announcement that the number belonged to the Sheriff’s department – another part of the intended scam.
Sheriff’s deputies will never call offering to make a deal on warrants or fines.
