Santa Cruz City Council members got an earful last night during the council meeting that included oral communications about the depot park safe sleeping and storage plan to house the homeless.
Mayor Martine Watkins allowed public comment on the proposed depot park homeless encampment to continue for an extra 30 minutes. Speaker after speaker denounced the plan as unsafe with close proximity to a park with soccer fields and a playground. Not one individual spoke in support of the plan.
In the end… council member Cynthia Mathews made a motion to put the depot park homeless encampment on the april 9th agenda. Meanwhile, other council members agreed the depot park plan was not a good solution and they resolved to find other locations. The encampment at the gateway plaza shopping plaza is due to close april 17th.
