When they meet this evening, Santa Cruz city council members expect to consider a less restrictive version of rent control, than what was proposed in Measure M (on the November ballot). Council members are considering a law that would penalize landlords (with property in the city) from raising rents more than 10 percent in 1 year, or 15.5 percent in 2 consecutive years. The new proposal is subject to the defeat of Measure M, which was a citizen-led “Rent Control” and “Just-Cause Eviction” initiative.
This evening’s meeting is slated to begin at 7 p.m., in the Santa Cruz City Council Chambers at 809 Center Street.
