Old Marijuana Convictions Could Be Erased 08-23-18 0550 DC

State lawmakers have approved a bill requiring prosecutors to reduce or erase thousands of criminal marijuana convictions. The bill now awaits governor jerry brown’s signature.

Proposition 64, passed in 2016, allowing adult use of marijuana, also eliminated several marijuana-related crimes. It required past pot convictions to go away as well, but created no mechanism for doing so.

The law passed Wednesday created such a mechanism, requiring the state department of justice to identify eligible cases and forward information to local prosecutors for action.
