More than 50 thousand homes in Santa Cruz county are said to be at-risk of damage from wildfires. The study looked at several factors to determine the risk, including how close a property (and any structures on it) are to forests, shrubs, and trees, and whether it’s in hilly or mountainous terrain. 52,400 homes (or 50%) are considered high risk in Santa Cruz county, while only 28 percent of Monterey county homes are at high-risk, and 29 percent of homes in San Benito county. People are encouraged to create defensible space around their homes. For more information, people can go on-line to: ReadyForWildfire.org
