January 12, 2016: California Prison Officials Propose Regulations on Clothed Visitor Searches

(07:48) CALIFORNIA – California corrections officials have proposed regulations that would expand prison security with a focus on drug sniffing dogs. Last year, state legislators banned the practice of visitor strip searches. The Corrections Department has since proposed to scrutinize an individual for up to a year if dogs detect traces of drugs on their person during a visitor search. Additionally, visitors who refuse searches would be subject to penalties. Meanwhile, state lawmakers are considering a proposal to increase spending on drug sniffing dogs and other methods to prevent drug smuggling. (S.G.)
