The Santa Cruz City Council voted against a July Fourth Fireworks Show yesterday, but agreed to host an October Open Streets event to celebrate the city’s birthday instead. City officials said that the council decided against the fireworks display because it would decrease access to Santa Cruz’s Main Beach and would also diminish public safety resources. To help organize the October Open Streets event, the city of Santa Cruz will donate $25,000.
