35 high fire hazard “target areas” around the state have been identified by the California Department Of Forestry And Fire Protection (aka Cal-Fire). They include portions of Big Sur, the Carmel Highlands, and Carmel Valley. To mitigate the danger to life and property, Cal-Fire has created the Palo Corona – White Rock Fire Roads Project, where they plan to create 54 miles of fuel break and reduced fuel zone adjacent to the fire access roads around the Los Padres National Monument.
