2 Monterey County schools have been recognized for their work toward closing the achievement gap. The Department of Education named Monte Vista Elementary School (in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District); and the New Republic Elementary School (in the Santa Rita Union Elementary School District), California Distinguished Schools. Those schools, and others, will be honored at an award ceremony in February.
