Dr. Joel Wallach begins the show discussing a study of seniors with loss of smell. The study found that seniors over the age of 70 with loss of smell had a 50% increased risk of death. Doc asserts this is due to osteoporosis of the skull. Contending that cranial nerve number one is being squeezed causing the loss of the sense of smell.

Doug Winfrey and Dr. Wallach discuss a news article concerning hospital grades. A nonprofit group call “Leapfrog” looked at data from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and their own survey on medical mistake deaths. Finding that patients in hospitals that got a D or F were 92% more likely to die in the hospital. Those in a hosptal that got a C or B had a 88% and 32% respectively risk of dying an avoidable death.
